Articles (a, an, the) – Clear Logic for Hindi Speakers

सबसे पहले एक सच:
Hindi में articles का direct equivalent नहीं है।
इसीलिए English सीखते समय यह topic unnatural लगता है।

लेकिन articles random rules नहीं हैं।
ये specificity system हैं — यानी आप किसी चीज़ के बारे में general बात कर रहे हैं या specific।

English में तीन articles होते हैं:

a
an
the

और कभी-कभी article नहीं भी आता (zero article)।

1. A / An – Indefinite Articles

Use तब होता है जब noun singular हो और पहली बार introduce किया जा रहा हो।

I saw a dog.
She bought a car.

यहाँ dog या car कोई भी हो सकता है — specific नहीं।

A vs An

Rule sound पर depend करता है, spelling पर नहीं।

Consonant sound → a
a book
a university (यूनिवर्सिटी → “yoo” sound)

Vowel sound → an
an apple
an hour (silent h)

Sound rule याद रखें, spelling नहीं।

2. The – Definite Article

“The” तब use होता है जब listener को पता हो कि किस चीज़ की बात हो रही है।

I saw a dog. The dog was very friendly.

पहली बार a dog.
दूसरी बार specific dog → the dog.

Specific example:

Close the door.
(Which door? जो सामने है, context से clear है.)

3. No Article (Zero Article)

कुछ cases में article बिल्कुल नहीं लगता।

Plural general meaning
Dogs are loyal.
(General truth)
Uncountable nouns (general sense)
Water is important.
Gold is expensive.
Languages, subjects
I speak English.
She studies mathematics.

4. Common Confusions for Hindi Speakers

Mistake 1: Article छोड़ देना

I bought car ❌
Correct: I bought a car ✔

Singular countable noun बिना article के नहीं आता।

Mistake 2: Unnecessary “the”

The Ram is my friend ❌
Correct: Ram is my friend ✔

Proper nouns के साथ generally “the” नहीं आता।

लेकिन exceptions हैं:

The Ganga
The Himalayas
The United States

Countries normally बिना article आते हैं:

India
France

लेकिन plural या “states”, “kingdom”, “republic” वाले देशों में “the” आता है।

Mistake 3: General vs Specific

Compare करें:

I like music. (general)
I like the music you played. (specific)

The का मतलब है — हम दोनों जानते हैं किसकी बात हो रही है।

5. Superlatives and Ordinals

Superlative adjectives के साथ “the” आता है:

the best
the tallest
the most beautiful

Ordinal numbers के साथ भी:

the first day
the second chapter

6. Unique Things

Unique objects के साथ “the”:

the sun
the moon
the internet

क्योंकि ये one-of-a-kind हैं।

Deep Understanding

Article system को rule list की तरह मत देखिए।
इसे mental question की तरह देखिए:

क्या मैं किसी चीज़ को पहली बार introduce कर रहा हूँ? → a/an
क्या listener already जानता है किसकी बात हो रही है? → the
क्या मैं general बात कर रहा हूँ? → no article

बस यही तीन logic points system को clear कर देते हैं।

Hindi speakers article को ignore करते हैं क्योंकि Hindi में system नहीं है।
लेकिन English में article meaning बदल देता है।
